West Palm Beach - Gold Coast International Association Football Club ("Gold Coast INTER AFC") kicked off its inaugural United Soccer Premier League ("UPSL") season with a bang this past Sunday, as they defeated Sharks FC of Boynton Beach, 3 - 1, at the fan-named homefield, "The Sinkhole", at Mirasol Park in Palm Beach Gardens.
The first half of the match was very active, with Gold Coast INTER AFC getting the better of Sharks FC, as #7 Brian Thibault II went down in record books as being Gold Coast INTER AFC's first goal scorer in the UPSL after a very unselfish pass by Man of the Match, #10 Khaled Eid. Thibault and Eid created an effective duo up top, as Eid scored 2 more goals from 2 of Thibault's assists before the half.
The second half was a different affair, after multiple substitutions found Gold Coast INTER AFC struggling to find the same chemistry as in the first half. Sharks FC launched an attempted comeback that resulted in #9 Alzí Giammattei going in a bit too harshly on a tackle in Gold Coast INTER AFC's penalty area, and a resulting penalty kick was awarded and converted around the 65th minute.
But the defending held strong afterwards, and Gold Coast INTER AFC will be kicking themselves for not capitalizing on more chances, as match finished, 3 - 1. Both sides were elated to have gotten the first match under their belt and to have played and participated against good competition.
